Project Summary

Research showed that a high proportion of High school leavers from
disadvantaged backgrounds were not continuing their studies or finding
their way in steady employment. Umthombo received an initial € 16,000
from ICCO – a Dutch based charity to initiate a pilot project. Together with
further funding the Trust was able to set up this entrepreneurship pilot
project. Initially it worked with groups of young people from Graaf -Reinet
in the Eastern Cape on guided two year programme of confidence
building, practical skills, business and computer training as well as
placements with businesses in their preferred area of interest.

What was the outcome?

The participants attended the course with significant success for two
years. They wanted further support to help them set-up their own
enterprises and so a wide range of small businesses were set up and
mentored for a following two years. These included fabric printing and
picture framing, office supplies and secretarial services. Others found full
time employment in the construction sector and a further group were
helped into tertiary studies which included social work and business
administration. Overall the project was a huge success!
